Los Cabos Reopens to Welcome Back Tourists

Table of Contents

Los Cabos, Mexico started its phased reopening on June 15th based on the plan of the Los Cabos Tourism Board after going from a level 6 Health Alert to Level 5, which allows the reopening of non-essential businesses.

After several months of closure, this incredible holiday destination is ready for a gradual reopening. The Los Cabos’ travel and tourism industry made a huge effort to reopen the destination and should be congratulated for the progress it made on swiftly implementing new health and safety protocols in the destination. The World Travel and Tourism Council (WTTC) has recognized their efforts and has given Baja California Sur, including Cabo San Lucas and San José del Cabo, its stamp of approval as a Safe Destination, as international tourism starts up again.

Back to Business

Local Businesses in Los Cabos

The government of the state of Baja California Sur gave the green light for many local businesses, including tour companies, resorts, and restaurants to reopen with reduced capacity restrictions of 30 per cent to avoid crowding, however, bars and nightclubs will remain closed until further notice. Capacity restrictions will hopefully be increased to at least 50 per cent over the summer months until they get back to what they were pre-pandemic with about 85 per cent occupancy rates.

Adán Monroy, Los Cabos Health Director, said: “People should continue complying with sanitary measures like face masks, using hand sanitizing gel, keeping a safe distance and taking temperatures outside businesses.”

Businesses must be certified by the health authorities before they are allowed to reopen. The Federal Commission for Protection against Health Risks (COFEPRIS) together with the Civil Protection authorities will carry out inspections to determine whether companies are in compliance with recommended new health and sanitization protocols. Companies that are not compliant with the new standards, will be subject to closure or a fine.

Garza Blanca Resort & Spa Los Cabos

Garza Blanca Los Cabos

Garza Blanca Resort & Spa Los Cabos reopened on June 20th after receiving the mandatory certification by COFEPRIS for meeting high hygiene standards. Additionally, it was mandatory for each staff member to pass a 5-hour course called ‘Recommendations for safe return to work after COVID-19′ from the IMSS, another government institution, and receive their own certificate. The course covered information on health measures & practices to prevent the spread of coronavirus.

Garza Blanca Los Cabos is the newest addition to TAFER Hotels & Resorts award-winning family of luxury resorts. The resort had been temporarily closed for renovations prior to the pandemic hitting, which caused its planned reopening to be delayed. The General Manager, Arturo Esponda, said, “We put a lot of time and effort into the renovation. The extended time we had to remain closed due to coronavirus was used to make sure every detail of the resort was perfect.” All the staff were very excited to welcome the first guests back to the resort after the more than three-month long closure. “Everything has come together and knowing that guests and members can now experience the improvements we have made is incredibly rewarding,” Arturo said. There is a feeling of pride that wafts through the luxury resort.
