Mexico’s Huichol People

The show is held on top of three magnificent naturally formed stone pyramids. The show explores the origins of the Huichol people, an indigenous group native to the San Luis Potosi area of Mexico who migrated to portions of the Sierra Madre mountain range in states including Jalisco, Nayarit, Durango and Zacatecas. Their deeply spiritual connection to nature, animals and spirits bring forth ancient rituals that are a very important part of their culture. They have managed to maintain many of the pre-Columbian practices which often include weeping, singing and contacting the spirits of their ancestors. The Huichol have proudly continued their shamanistic practices and have eschewed Catholic ideologies that have been embraced by large portions of the population in Mexico.

An Enchanting Place

Wirikuta is the name of the place where the Huichol people journey to every year (typically by foot) in order to collect peyote, a cactus that is used in important religious tribal rituals and the show is inspired by this fascinating tradition. Once they arrive in Wirikuta, the Huichol begin their search for peyote. The first cactus discovered is divided and shared with the group, and they continue to gather enough peyote for the next year. Consuming the plant helps them to have visions, which allow the shaman to communicate with the gods and ensure the soul of each Huichol is renewed.
