Table of Contents

Los Cabos is the area encompassing Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo in the state of Baja California Sur, Mexico. If you’re thinking of visiting Los Cabos, you may be wondering what to do in Los Cabos. As one of the premiere tourism destinations in Mexico, Los Cabos has numerous activities for tourists to enjoy. So, let’s dive deeper into what to do in Los Cabos.

Visit Land’s End and El Arco

These natural rock formations at the very southern tip of the Baja California peninsula are the signature landmarks of Los Cabos. Over the ages, the waves and the water’s current have carved out an arch in the rocks at Land’s End, and that arch is known as El Arco. You’ve seen it in photos, but seeing it in person is a whole different experience. The majesty of El Arco will take your breath away, so don’t miss this excursion! The best way to see El Arco is by boat. You can hire a water taxi to take you there, or take one of the glass bottom boat tours that leaves from the marina.

Glass bottom boat departures are available between 10:00 am and 4:00 pm, and the tours take you to other landmarks on the way to El Arco, such as Sea Lions Colony, Pirate’s Cave, Pelican Rock, Lover’s Beach and Divorce Beach. The glass bottom boats are fun because you can see tropical fish swimming around beneath your feet while on the boat. This excursion is great for families with children, or anyone who enjoys a day on the water.

If you’d like to splurge a little more on your trip to El Arco, you can hire a luxury yacht to sail your group around, or book a dinner cruise. If you’re feeling adventurous you can take a kayaking or paddle boarding tour around El Arco, and you can swim and snorkel in the area too.

Water Sports

Speaking of water sports, there are numerous areas around Los Cabos for swimming, snorkeling, paddle boarding, kayaking, and scuba diving. You can even find flyboarding, jet skiing and parasailing.

If you go parasailing from Medano Beach, you can see Lover´s Beach and El Arco from the air. Parasailing can be done solo or tandem with a friend.

Medano beach is also the main beach where you will find beach vendors selling everything including blankets, souvenirs, food, drinks, and everything under the sun.

Whale Watching

Los Cabos has some of the best whale watching tours in Mexico. Being right on the Sea of Cortez, which is known as the Aquarium of the World, means that you have the opportunity to see numerous species of wildlife and marine life while out on a whale watching excursion. Several tour companies bring a marine biologist along on the tours, to help the captain navigate to areas where you’ll be likely to spot humpback whales or gray whales, as well as to point out other animals such as dolphins, manta rays, and sea lions. Some whale watching tours provide breakfast on the boat, while others provide cocktails or an open bar.

Eco Tours

Besides whale watching, there are lots of other tours in Cabo that you can take to have fun and explore the area. ATV tours are a great way to explore the beaches, deserts, canyons, and mountains of Cabo. Horseback riding is one of the most delightful experiences in Los Cabos, and camel tours are also available.

Day Trips

Day trips are a must in Los Cabos. Whether you are staying in Cabo San Lucas or San Jose del Cabo, it is always worth taking a drive to the other city. Head out on Highway 1, which is also known as the Tourist Corridor that connects the two cities. It’s a short drive, but you can find some hidden gems along the way.

Santa Maria Beach is located just off Highway 1 in between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo, at kilometer 12. You’ll see a beach access sign where you can turn down the road to the parking lot. Yes, this beach has its own parking lot, so you don’t have to worry about where to park. Just a short walk from the parking lot you’ll find a wide, sandy beach in a horseshoe-shaped cove which is called Santa Maria Bay. Bring your own picnic lunch and umbrella, because there are no restaurants or services, only an occasional beach vendor. You can swim and snorkel right off the beach. Santa Maria Beach is a Blue Flag beach, which means it is clean and ecologically friendly. In fact, Santa Maria Bay is a protected marine sanctuary, so you will be able to see tropical fish in the water. Early morning is the best time of day to snorkel with the clearest water. You can hire a private charter for a snorkel, kayak and paddle board tour of Santa Maria Beach, which also stops at El Arco for photos on the way.

There is an alternative route if you want to drive between Cabo San Lucas and San Jose del Cabo. Highway 1D is known as the Los Cabos Toll Road, and it goes from downtown Cabo San Lucas to the Los Cabos Airport outside of San Jose del Cabo. The toll is 65 pesos.

Puerto Paraiso Mall

If you’re in the mood for shopping, you’ve got to check out Puerto Paraiso Mall. Located in the heart of Cabo San Lucas at the marina, Puerto Paraiso is Cabo’s premier shopping destination.
